There are great opportunities to explore the San Diego area, including a Research Symposium workshop at the world-famous San Diego Zoo, amazing field trips that include one binational excursion, and even a pre-conference excursion to spectacular Santa Cruz Island.

Spotlight on Early Childhood

Sign up for a preconference workshops held on Thursday, October 15. There are three early childhood workshops to pick from: The Playful Path to Environmental Literacy: Family Learning Through Play; Using Found Objects to Introduce STEM Concepts to Little Ones; and Woodsy Owl Early Childhood Environmental Education.

You'll also be able to choose from hands-on presentations, traditional presentations, roundtable discussions, and poster presentations throughout the conference (October 15-18) that showcase the best in early childhood environmental education, including a networking breakfast session hosted by The Natural Start Alliance.

Inspiring Keynote Speakers

Here’s the line-up of engaging speakers in San Diego:

  • Steve Pemberton has gone from being a forgotten ward of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to becoming a trailblazing Divisional Vice President at Walgreens and the first Chief Diversity Officer for the 113-year-old company.
  • Jackie Ogden, Vice President of Animals, Science and Environment at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, leads a team responsible for inspiring millions of Disney guests, employees, and business partners to conserve wildlife and the environment.
  • Andy Goodman is co-founder and director of The Goodman Center, which teaches public interest professionals how to reach more people with more impact. Along with the book, Storytelling as Best Practice, he is best known for his speeches and workshops on storytelling and strategic communications.
  • Juan D. Martinez is the Children & Nature Network’s Director of Leadership Development and the Natural Leaders Network, which focuses on celebrating the positive value of nature.  At the conference, Juan will serve as moderator of a panel discussion: “Game Changers Under 25: What Can We Learn?” highlighting young game changers from the US and Mexico, who are leading the way for the next generation.

Other Exciting Highlights

Share your work at the Opening Reception Thursday, October 15. In addition to welcoming NAAEE’s newest members and rekindling friendships, you can check out what your colleagues are up to during the opening reception, which includes the Share Fair, the Authors’ Corner, and the new Members Marketplace. Sign up for one of three opportunities to share your work. At the Share Fair, nonprofit organizations highlight their successful programs and inspiring ideas through tabletop displays and engaging conversations. Authors can promote, sign, and sell their publications in the Authors’ Corner. And, are you a potter? A jewelry maker? A beekeeper? New this year, bring your creative wares to share and sell in the Members Marketplace.

On Saturday, October 17, you are invited to our Annual Gala and Auction at the historical and beautiful Fiesta de Reyes, located within Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. This will be a festive celebration for all to enjoy—and an opportunity to support student scholarships through the live and silent auctions. It’s the perfect place to revel in 19th century history, as the Casa de Reyes restaurant is on the site of one of San Diego’s first adobe homes, built in 1823. There, Dona Maria de los Reyes Ybanez de Dominguez warmly welcomed her friends and guests, just as Fiesta de Reyes welcomes NAAEE nearly 200 years later.
