New Toy Tops the TOADY Award for Worst Toy of the Year
December 10, 2013
Just one day after the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood announced the winner of its worst-toy-of-the-year competition--the iPotty--a new, even more questionable toy has come on the market.
The Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood is taking this toy release seriously:
The Fisher-Price Newborn-to-Toddler Apptivity™ Seat for iPad® device is a bouncy seat for an infant—with a place for an iPad directly above the baby’s face, blocking his or her view of the rest of the world. Babies are literally a captive audience. Please take a moment and visit http://org.salsalabs.com/o/621/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=14741 to tell Fisher-Price to pull the plug immediately on this terrible product. The Apptivity Seat is the ultimate electronic baby sitter. Because screens can be mesmerizing and babies are strapped down and “safely" restrained, it encourages parents to leave infants all alone with an iPad. To make matters worse, Fisher-Price is marketing the Apptivity Seat—and claiming it’s educational—for newborns. Parents are encouraged to download “early learning apps” that claim to “introduce baby to letters, numbers and more.” There’s no evidence that babies benefit from screen time and some evidence that it might be harmful. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages any screen time for children under two.
