The ECO Institute provides inquiry-based, outdoor learning through intensive experiential lessons, activities, and discussions. Led by NBNC staff and partners, participants will move beyond the classroom and engage with nature as a learning partner. Participants will develop a nature pedagogy and learn to incorporate VELS, NGSS, and Common Core into their design of nature immersion curricula.
*Graduate credit is offered through Castleton University and the Castleton Center for Schools.
Our ECO level 1 course for early childhood educators introduces participants to the core routines that structure a successful outdoor classroom experience. Participants will:
Engage in provocations and learning around forest classroom management, foundational math and literacy skill development outdoors, teaching with fire, and meeting VELS in partnership with natural spaces.
Learn how to conduct risk benefit assessments and manage hazards within an outdoor classroom space.
Develop a knowledge base and skill set to incorporate nature immersion into your program in a way that meets the needs of your students. Art, nature, and the young child

Hamline University is accepting registration for a summer class, entitled "Art, nature and the young child" offered from June 25 through Aug 4. This course will help teachers and parents consider ways to combine art and nature in early childhood experiences. With art as our focus, we will investigate current research and best practices in early childhood development. Using hands-on and multi-sensory activities, we will create a set of resources to share with each other. The course is online, with two field site visits required. If you are not located in MN, the instructor will work with you to identify appropriate sites to visit in your area.
Cost for participation is $354/credit.
