We are excited to share that Discover the Forest, an early childhood outdoor learning initiative of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), has launched with a reimagined website and new resources for families and early childhood educators.
Many are familiar with Discover the Forest from its long-standing public service campaign, which encouraged families to connect with nature, one another, and explore our nation’s National Forests. Building on that legacy, program resources now place a deeper focus on early childhood and on everyday, nearby nature—including schoolyards, neighborhood parks, urban forests, and community green spaces.
The new Discover the Forest website offers:
- High-quality, fun activities for young children that foster holistic child development and connection to nature
- Practical guidance to help families and educators make outdoor learning part of everyday routines
- Clear, evidence-based information connecting outdoor experiences to children’s learning, health, and environmental literacy
Developed through research, collaboration with experts, and direct input from educators and caregivers, these resources are designed to complement existing programs and support real-world practice across diverse early learning settings.
Together with Natural Start, these resources advance NAAEE’s mission of creating a more just, sustainable future for all, starting with our youngest learners.
We invite you to explore the reimagined Discover the Forest and consider how these tools might support your work with young children and families.
