Nearly a quarter of all children in the US speak a language other than English in the home. In some states, that percentage is over a third, and in some urban areas, more than half of children may be learning multiple languages. How can we best support children in their language learning outdoors, and are there elements of nature-based, outdoor learning that are particularly helpful in language learning? Join us to hear some of the latest research and learn from programs that have made nature and language learning central in their curriculum.

  • Anna Jennerjohn

    Anna Jennerjohn

    Anna Jennerjohn, PhD, is an educational researcher who focuses on children's explorations of language, literacy, science, and nature. Previously an elementary teacher in bilingual schools, she now works at Rockman et al Cooperative Research & Evaluation when she's not biking, skiing, or hiking with her own children.

  • Felissa Agortsas

    Felissa Agortsas

    Felissa Agortsas earned her BA degree in Child Development, specializing in Preschool Administration, from California State University Los Angeles. She graduated in the top 1% of her class, with the distinguished honors of Magna Cum Laude. She then went to work as a Child Development Specialist at Saddleback College Child Development Center for 6 years. There she served as a California Mentor Teacher. Felissa has continued her education by completing the Outdoor Classroom Project Level 1 Specialist Training, as well as P.I.T.C. (Program for Infant Toddler Care) certification. Felissa earned her MA in Early Childhood Education from CSU Long Beach in 2020. Her passions are gardening, travel, and yoga.

    Ana Morice

    Ana is a mother of two children, nature lover and passionate educator. She started her journey back in Costa Rica as a SpEd teacher. On the side, she co directed nature camps and deliver outdoor experiences for her elementary school students. She moved 6 years ago to Minnesota, where she found an amazing nature learning community that encouraged her to follow her passion for nature and children. She is the founder of the Amigos del Bosque nature preschool outside Minneapolis.
