Anna Murray-Douglass Academy School #12, nestled in Rochester, NY, is pioneering a comprehensive Nature-Based Learning (NBL) program that integrates nature connection experiences into the core curriculum for students in grades PreK–6. Led by Nature-Based Learning Coach Kyra Stephenson, the program emphasizes the profound relationship between nature and education. The NBL program is built upon three core foundations:

  1. Academic Growth: Students engage in hands-on, nature connected learning experiences that enhance cognitive development and academic performance.
  2. Holistic Wellness: Nature-based activities promote physical health and emotional well-being, supporting social-emotional learning and resilience.
  3. Community Building with People and Planet: The program fosters connections among students, educators, and families, and our natural world cultivating a sense of belonging and collective responsibility.

Program Structure and Curriculum
The NBL program is organized into thematic, year-long units tailored to each grade level:

  • PreK/K: Exploring place and body awareness through play

  • Grade 2: Promoting humane treatment of animals
  • Grade 3: From Flowers to Feast, investigating pollinators and their role in food systems
  • Grade 4: The Story of This Place: 450 Million Years in the Making
